The head fire wave came through a canyon; this was where the fire burned the hottest and the desolation of the native vegetation the greatest. This monster fire destroyed 38,819 acres of native grass and 9257 acres of cultivated land for a total loss of 48,076 acres, which equals over 2 complete townships or approximately 75 sections.
Before the firestorm was contained it had burned around, or through, 17 occupied building sites destroying 5 residences and badly damaging a 6th. Loss of buildings are estimated at 1.4 million dollars and the contents are estimated at $600,000.
One person was seriously injured and was hospitalized. Several fire personnel were also treated for smoke inhalation and minor eye injuries.
196 cattle perished in this fire along with 4 horses and 2 llamas.
3326 tons of hay, 1300 tons of straw, and 480 tons of green feed were also destroyed in the firestorm.
In total, damages are expected to exceed 6 million dollars. These losses are borne by approximately 35 business operations in varying degrees. The financial impact on these operations is significant and in some could be severe enough to result in financial failure. Uninsured losses will average over $200,000 per operation.
